General information
Headteacher: Chris McGovern, appointed in September 2005.
Staff: 25 (men 13, women 12).
Background: Victorian origins and based in two Victorian buildings in the centre of Hampstead 'village'. It retains a relaxed, even slightly Bohemian, air with boys, staff and parents using first names. No bells. There is a indoor swimming pool and playgrounds on site but sports fields 15 minutes away. Purpose-built Science lab and Art/DT room. An academic school feeding major public schools - recent top scholarship to Westminster. Five foreign languages on offer. This is the first school in the UK to make Mandarin a compulsory part of the curriculum for all of its very youngest pupils. There is a strong sense music and drama with choirs, orchestra and rock bands. Former pupil set up Razorlight group that performed at Liveaid concert in Hyde Park.'Sport for all' but also some high achievements - recent winners of London cross-country competition, two of top ten UK school-boy fencers, a handful of London's best young tennis players with three out of four semi-finalists in recent London tournament. The usual range of sports include soccer, rugby, cricket, athletics, swimming. The Active Charity Group is run by parents to combine fund-raising with social events, e.g. recent day trip to Padua, home of the school saint. Catholic academic, but liberal and inclusive.
Approach to discipline: The school's policy seeks to set high expectations, recognise and praise good behaviour and help the staff to manage pupils consistently and fairly. The merit mark and commendation schemes are formal means of praising children. However, sanctions will prove to be appropriate from time to time, especially with older children.
Uniform: Year one to four: blazer, white aertex shirt and green sweatshirt. Years 5 to 8: blazer, tie, shirt and trousers of choice. Years five to six: blazer, white aertex or blue shirt, tie, blue sweatshirt. Years seven: blazer, white or blue shirt, tie, blue sweatshirt. Years eight: blazer, tie, choice of trousers and shirts..
Special needs: Provision is made for children with specific learning difficulties but not for those with severe difficulties. Gifted children may also receive support.
Inspection: November 2004: ?St Anthony?s School derives a strong sense of community from its underlying Catholic and caring ethos, within which both boys and staff thrive. Good teaching and a considerable amount of individual support enable pupils to achieve well, both within the school and in examinations to secondary schools. Pupils enjoy very good, informal and respectful relationships with members of staff and appreciate the high quality of care they receive from them. They bring a positive and enthusiastic approach to their work. Some limitations in professional review mean that planning for further improvements is not always sharply focused enough.?.
