General information
Headteacher: Suzanne Meaden.
Background: St Margaret's School is an independent girls? school, one of the two oldest schools in Hampstead. It was founded by Miss Elizabeth in 1884. As the school grew it moved to Oak Hill Park in 1899. At the start of World War II the school was evacuated to Burgess Hill in Sussex, but returned to Hampstead in 1940. It expanded again and moved this time to its present location in 1943. The national curriculum forms the core of learning for girls in the infant classes. In addition to English, mathematics, science, history, geography, art, craft, design and technology and drama, all of which are taught by their class teacher, the girls are taught music, physical education and French by specialist teachers who teach throughout the junior and senior departments. The school has the use of a gymnasium a short walk away from the school, and tennis and netball courts on the playing field on the Hocroft Estate. The girls cover a range of sporting activities throughout the school year and there are several extra-curricular clubs, which girls may join. These include gym, self-defence and horse riding.
Inspection: April 2001: St. Margaret's is a good school, with some significant strengths, providing a generally broad education appropriate to the ages and abilities of its pupils. Consistent with its ethos of caring for and nurturing each individual pupil, it has a good system of pastoral care, and achieves high standards of attainment and behaviour. Some of the issues it needs to consider are the structure of its management systems, the balance of its curriculum, and the most efficient deployment of its staff.
Girls' age range: 4 to 16.
