General information

Headteacher: T Dunbar.

Staff: 17 (men 2, women 15).

Background: The school was established in 1875 in Cavendish Square, W1, as part of the original foundation of the Society of The Holy Child Jesus. In 1970, when the Order left Cavendish Square, the school was handed over to the Cavendish School Educational Trust. The school then moved to its present 'spacious' accommodation in 'an imaginatively-modernised Victorian school building with its own secluded playgrounds and netball court'. In 1993, the acquisition of an adjoining building allowed expansion providing two classrooms, additional cloakrooms, science room, art room, large library and short tennis court. There is a fully-fitted IT room housing 13 computers. In 1998, the school won the Westonbirt award for science investigation in a prep school, was runner-up in 1996 and winner and runner-up in 1997. Pupils have also won prizes in the Royal Mail Young Letter Writers competition. After-school clubs include chess, karate, pottery, aerobics and Spanish. Lunchtime clubs for Years five and six include Latin, cross-stitch, art and maths games.

Approach to discipline: 'Based on love of Christian freedom, we promote a positive and supportive climate.'

Uniform: Cavendish green blazer; skirt; summer dress; tracksuit on games days; white polo shirt with embroidered logo. 'Rigorously enforced'.

Inspection: May 2006: 'The Cavendish School provides a well-integrated, broad and stimulating education, underpinned by Christian values, which focuses on the needs of each individual and is inclusive of all. By the time they leave the school, girls are extremely good learners, capable of undertaking independent tasks of some sophistication and taking responsibility for their own learning. In addition, they demonstrate a deep and meaningful spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness in line with the schools? aims and its Catholic tradition. Most of the teaching is good, with a significant proportion outstanding. In particular, teaching fosters in girls a willingness to engage fully in their own learning and to think for themselves. Only occasionally does it lack pace or become too teacher directed. The school has a very effective partnership with parents and makes full use of the rich and varied multi-cultural environment around it. Pastoral care, the corner stone of school life, is imbued with gospel values that permeate the high quality of care and support. Governors, head and senior management share a clear vision of the compassionate and spiritual nature of the school, and of the holistic, supportive and individual education it aims to provide for its pupils. Excellent strategic and day-to-day leadership enables the school to provide a very firm basis for girls? future education. Since the last inspection the school has maintained high standards in many areas. In addition, it has expanded the range of activities available to girls and further enhanced the curriculum. Systems of assessment have been improved and the management of the curriculum further developed. The school has built much enhanced facilities for ICT, teaching and administration at the front of the school. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'

Secondary schools: Channing; City of London; Frances Holland; Queens; South Hampstead.
