General information

Headteacher: Philip Lough, appointed in September 2006.

Staff: 43 (men 17, women 26).

Background: The Hall was founded in 1889, with the junior school opening in 1917. More recently, a middle school was built in 1998. Most boys enter the junior school at the age of four or five, transfer to the middle school at eight and to the senior school at 10. In middle school, they are increasingly introduced to the idea of specialist teaching, using the facilities of the senior school for science, IT and DT. The school has undergone extensive development and refurbishment in recent years, with particular attention to the construction of a new music school and the upgrading of its labs. A new library with a most imaginative design opened in 2001. All boys benefit from the Wathen sports hall and a variety of games are played on the school fields in East End Road in Finchley. Inter-school fixtures are arranged for athletics, basketball, cricket, cross-country, hockey, rugby, soccer and tennis. Fencing is a particular strength and the school has a number of nationally ranked pupils. It prides itself on the breadth of the education it offers. All boys over the age of nine learn art, drama, music, pottery, IT, DT and current affairs as part of the curriculum. 80 per cent of pupils learn a musical instrument. The school is selective and all pupils are assessed on academic potential. The school aims to provide an excellent education through academic achievement and involvement in activities.

Approach to discipline: The school expects the highest levels of behaviour. Morals and code of conduct are instilled in all boys.

Uniform: Grey trousers/shorts, grey shirt, grey pullover with pink edging, pink/black striped tie.

Special needs: There are four part time learning support staff to help boys with dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Inspection: October 2004: 'The Hall is an exciting school in which, due to excellent leadership by the headmaster, very good governance and energetic senior management, enthused and eager pupils reach high academic and personal standards. Throughout the school, committed and hard working staffs provide pupils with a wide range of very good and, on occasion, excellent experiences that challenge and extend their knowledge. An outstanding programme of additional curricular activities contributes significantly to pupils? very good personal development. In each part of the school, happy pupils learn and behave extremely well.'
