General information

Headteacher: K J Douglas, appointed in September 2001.

Staff: 18 (men 12, women 6).

Background: The school was founded in 1891 by the governors of University College, London. Its present building opened in 1928, since when there have been extensive additions and facilities are now first-rate. It stands in pleasant grounds in a very agreeable residential area, near the highest point of Hampstead Heath, a five-minute walk from the senior school in Frognal. Both schools make use of a 27-acre playing field site situated on the borders of West Hampstead and Cricklewood and junior boys are taken there by coach. Drama and French are taught as part of the curriculum and sports include rugby, football, cricket, hockey, swimming, cross-country, athletics, karate, fencing and gymnastics. The school is strong in music and drama, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities and societies include an orchestra, dramatic society and chess club. The philosophy is one of the pursuit of academic excellence within a broad curriculum and a respect for and encouragement of independent thought and judgement. The founders believed that faith was a matter for the family and individual and that religion in any form should be neither a requirement for entry nor a subject for teaching. This tradition continues today. Admissions are made according to academic ability. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Kindness, helpfulness, honesty and the ability to work independently are qualities that the school emphasises in its aims to provide for the steady maturing of a boy's personality.

Approach to discipline: The school was founded to promote principles of liberal scholarship. Selection is made with no regard to race or creed. The school aims to foster a sense of community alongside a tolerance of and a respect for the individual.

Uniform: Maroon and black striped blazer, house tie, white/plain-coloured shirt, dark trousers. Boys are encouraged to be proud of their school and uniform. Uniform regulations are therefore enforced.

Special needs: Two part-time special educational needs teachers support the school when required.

Inspection: November 2005: 'University College School, Junior Branch provides an education that enables pupils to achieve high standards in English, mathematics and science. Pupils benefit significantly from very good quality teaching, very good provision for their personal development and a high level of care and support. The most positive ethos results in very good relationships, good behaviour and appropriately enthusiastic attitudes to work. The school is well led and managed, very well resourced and very good links have been established with parents. However, the role of subject co-ordinators is not yet fully developed, the school lacks a fully effective system to monitor and evaluate its work, and pupils? work is not always well marked.'
