General information

Headteacher: Kenneth Durham, appointed in 1996.

Background: Scholarship at UCS is underpinned by a liberal philosophy that distinguishes the school from its peers. Intellectual curiosity, breadth of study and independence of mind are the governing principles at this tolerant school, which has no religious or ethnic boundaries. The school occupies spacious buildings in Hampstead, with 27 acres of playing fields nearby. Facilities include a new research library, extensive ICT provision and a theatre. A modern languages centre is part of a new development programme that will also add a new sports and fitness centre with indoor pool to the main site. Other advances include the doubling of bursary provision and the transition to a coeducational sixth form in September 2008. The curriculum is wide and includes Latin, music and drama. From age 13, boys may choose to study German, Spanish or Greek and most will take at least nine GCSEs. Art, music and drama all contribute greatly to school life and boys take part in a host of performances and exhibitions. The physical fitness of pupils is of great importance and generous amounts of time are set aside for sport. Rugby, hockey, cross-country, cricket and athletics are the main sports, with options such as canoeing, fencing, golf, sailing and fives also on offer. The school has its own field centre in Co Durham that doubles as a base for practical work in geography and biology.
