General information

Background: Established in 1970 following merger of two single-sex grammar schools and Ty Celyn secondary; current school unified on single site in 1973. Set in attractive grounds two miles outside city centre in residential Cyncoed/Lakeside district. Facilities include two halls, learning resources centre, gymnasium, sports hall, 11 science laboratories, recording studio, catering kitchen and restaurant, dance/drama studio, five technology and five information technology rooms. Sixth-form teaching concentrated in one part of school, which has own study area and seminar rooms. Pupils have access to all-weather pitch, two rugby pitches, netball and tennis courts. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place; 40 appeals from unsuccessful applicants each year. Prides itself on all-round curriculum strengths. Excellent sports record includes girls' athletics team, who are recent Welsh champions. Societies on offer include hockey, badminton, cricket, football, netball, baseball, gymnastics, tennis, swimming, computers, drama, art, Christian Union, choirs, orchestras and chess.
