General information

Headteacher: G J Evans.

Staff: 9 (men 1, women 8).

Background: Founded in 1870; purpose-built buildings close to Cardiff city centre. Excellent facilities and well resourced, particularly in the area of ICT.Broad and balanced curriculum; generally follows national curriculum, although pupils are taught French from age of four. Wide range of sporting activities; some have represented their sport at both county and national level. Extra-curricular activities include judo, fencing, chess, drama, dance and gymnastics. Kings Monkton is a centre for local activities, with its premises being used by number of organisations. The school also supports specific charities and raises about £5,000 annually for good causes. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 6pm. Ethos: 'Success, tolerance and harmony.' .

Approach to discipline: Comprehensive discipline policy and code of conduct promote a sense of community and shared values. Self-discipline is encouraged and good behaviour rewarded.

Uniform: Navy blazer, blue/green tie, green/white blouse, green/white summer dress.

Special needs: School offers support to pupils identified as having a special need. Part-time special needs teacher offers one-to-one help. Special provision for gifted and talented pupils.

Inspection: November 2003: 'Pupils reach good standards in relation to their ability and their attainment is above the national average for schools with a similar ability range. They also reach good standards in their personal development. The very good support and guidance offered to all pupils and the positive response of pupils create a school in which success, tolerance and harmony are key features. The school has few weak features.'
