General information
Background: Pentyrch primary is a traditional village school. It is situated in the village of Pentyrch, seven miles to the north west of Cardiff. The school is established for the education of infant and junior children aged between 4 and 11 years.The main school building dates from 1907. It houses the reception class and year one, the office, library and IT suite, staff room, rescource room and the main hall. Years two, three, four, five and six are accommodated in demountable buildings in the school grounds. There is an ample playground and the school is fortunate in having a spacious playing field and hard surface adjacent to the school. Recently the school has created a school garden by the main entrance and painted a mural of children?s work on the extension to the main building.The school has strong links with community organisations such as the local nursery, St. Catwg?s church, local sports clubs (cricket, rugby, football, tennis and bowls) and the over 60?s club. Over the past five years the school has developed a close working relationship with Suutarila School in Helsinki. The schools regularly share information over the internet and children and staff take part in annual exchange visits. This developed initially through a collaborative science project involving schools in Wales, Finland, Spain and Sweden. The school also have links with schools in Barcelona, Lulea and Sweden. The school has a long history of supporting charities.The extra-curricular activities currently on offer include football, netball, rugby, choir, recorders and girl?s football. The County?s Music Service offer instrumental tuition for a range of instruments. The school aims to recognise and develop the varied talents and abilities of all pupils and staff to their fullest potential. The school provides a lively and stimulating learning environment. The staffs endeavour to create an atmosphere of richness, interest and challenge. Children and staff are encouraged to set and strive for high standards.
