General information

Headteacher: Catherine M Barnard.

Staff: 11 (women 11).

Background: The prep and senior schools founded in 1938 by the Sisters of St Clare and are set in their own 'magnificent' 13-acre grounds on the fringe of the Heritage Coastline in Newton, mid-way between the cities of Cardiff and Swansea, with easy access to the M4 motorway and the A48 trunk road. The school became fully co-educational in 1983 and boys and girls are now welcomed from all denominations and faiths. St Clare's aims to embody the ideals of St Francis and St Clare and offer a broad education based on sound Christian values in a happy, caring environment. It is non-selective, catering for a wide range of abilities and priding itself on encouraging each individual to achieve his or her all-round potential. Facilities include modern science laboratories, computer science, home economics, textiles and art rooms, playing fields, tennis courts and a swimming pool. The school is structured so as to provide an uninterrupted education from nursery level to A-level. The continuity of education allows each individual to develop confidence within a stable background, working with experienced and well-qualified members of staff. The nursery provides a variety of activities with time set aside each day for pre-reading and pre-number work. The Montessori method of learning through the senses of taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing is also incorporated into the nursery.

Approach to discipline: School has its own code of conduct to maintain discipline..

Uniform: Beige and brown colours with the badge of St Francis..

Secondary schools: St Clare's Senior School.
