General information

Background: The school began in 1924, and became a comprehensive school in 1977. It is situated in the town of Burry Port, drawing pupils from the coastal strip from Pwll to Kidwelly and inland to Trimsaran. The school has four main learning centres covering the whole range of specialist resources, including, a recently built languages block of seven classrooms for the teaching of English, Welsh, French and Spanish; three dedicated ICT rooms, and a CAD-CAM Design Suite; creative arts rooms including peripatetic music facilities, an art gallery and display room, and a ceramics room; five science laboratories; a full range of sports facilities including a multi-purpose Sports Hall (which the school manages jointly with the County Council for the provision of community access), squash and tennis courts, a gymnasium, a multi-gym and extensive playing fields; a fully equipped medical suite staffed by a part-time school nurse, assisted by two designated first aiders; Glan-y-Mor is the designated secondary school in the Llanelli area for children with physical disabilities, so the school has lifts and ramps which provide access for all pupils to the whole school. Also, the food and textiles rooms have been adapted to enable all pupils to work at the right level. The school has an emphasis on high standards of work, behaviour, attitude and appearance. There are strong links with the local college, and courses are taught jointly in Engineering and Salon Services. Although the medium of instruction is English, the school emphasises the Welsh dimension and offers elements of bilingual education to those who want it. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including music, sport, drama, art, Christian Union, Duke of Edinburgh Award, IT, Urdd etc. There are strong community links and a long history of supporting charities. This year (2006), the school received the RNLI?s Youth Supporter Award. An active school council has representatives attending the Town Council and the Carmarthenshire Youth Council. The school has received acclaim for its development of a behavioural support centre. Since the appointment of a new headteacher in January, a new system of Discipline for Learning? has been introduced across the school. ?The school is caring community; all concerned work together to create an atmosphere where pupils are valued as individuals.? The school aims to develop independent thinking, self-discipline, confidence and motivation. It provides challenging experiences that take account of individual needs, interests and aptitudes. In order to do this, the school aims to raise standards in the school by continuous improvement and excellence in teaching and learning.
