General information

Background: Set in a residential area of Macclesfield, the school is jointly maintained by Cheshire and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury. Its original buildings opened in 1962, with further additions in the mid-1970s. Facilities include workrooms for design and technology, home economics, assembly hall and stage, drama studio, a recently-opened business studies suite, four fully-equipped information technology rooms, extensive playing fields, sports hall and all-weather pitch. Information technology is used in all departments. The school is over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place. After all Catholic applicants have been accepted there are about three applications for each of the remaining places. The school 'sets great store by religious education and practice' and has a 'reputation' for music and drama, with pupils going on to university or repertory companies. It maintains international links, with paired schools in France, Germany, Spain and Poland. The school enjoys 'national sporting success' in badminton, athletics, cross-country, netball and swimming. It is a Centre of Excellence for music and receives regular invitations to the finals of choral singing at Royal Festival Hall and to attend studio recordings. It also organises joint productions with schools in Wissembourg, Bad Bergzabern and Erfurt.
