General information

Background: Barrow Primary is a local school which has been part of the community of Barrow since 1865. It is situated in rural Cheshire, five miles from Chester and occupies its original two classrooms with more recent improvements and additions including a new mobile classroom. Facilities include a library resource room, tarmacadam playgrounds and a playing field, and the school has its own pond, orchard and wildlife area. The school uses the local village hall for PE and drama and games include soccer, netball, hockey, cricket and rounders. Friendly football and netball matches are among the sporting activities arranged with local schools, and all Key Stage 2 pupils attend swimming sessions. For a charge, representatives from the Cheshire School of Music tutor pupils who have shown a desire to learn a musical instrument such as flute, clarinet, violin and keyboard. Extra-curricular activities vary according to staff availability. Pupils visit places of interest throughout the year and older children spend three days at the county outdoor education centre at Burwardsley every two years. The school's strong community links include Barrow Church and Barrowmore Nursing Home, and it is a member of the local Small Rural Schools Federation. Parents are encouraged to take an active part in school life. 'Our philosophy is that every child should be enabled to develop to their maximum.
