General information
Background: Tarporley Community High School is a popular and successful 11 to 18 comprehensive school that serves a large rural community. The school's original buildings are on an open site on the outskirts of Tarporley, a small country town in attractive countryside midway between Chester and Nantwich. The school has seven major faculties. It was 'significantly adapted and extended' in 1974 to add departmental areas and specialist provision including a sports hall, an extensive computer network and a language laboratory. The facilities for teaching technology and business education were 'substantially refurbished and upgraded' in 1993 as a result of the government's technology schools initiative and it was the only school in the county to receive such funding. The local branch of the county library, which has 25000 books, was built as part of the school complex and a sixth form centre sits next to the main building. On-site sports facilities include: a six-badminton court sports hall, extensive playing fields with provision for hockey, football, rugby, cricket, athletics and an Astroturf surface with facilities for hockey, netball, five a-side and tennis. Local football, cricket and badminton clubs use these facilities on a regular basis and form close links with the school. The school is also now a centre of excellence for cricket. The school offers a residential week for primary pupils before they join the high school. The school curriculum includes English, humanities, information and communication technology, modern foreign languages, science, mathematics, technology, art and music. Religious education is taught as a part of humanities in year seven to nine, and part of the English course in year 10 and 11 and as general studies in key stage five. The school has a strong commitment to community education. The school raises in excess of ? 6000 p.a for a variety of charities. The school aims to provide an open, caring and thinking, that invites the contribution of all individuals. This is a school where people want to be, because it is a friendly, purposeful and enjoyable place to work and learn.
