General information

Background: Founded in 1862, the school is still housed in its original Gothic Victorian building. With no playing fields on site, the school makes much use of Westminster Play Association's 'very well-equipped and staffed' sports centre. The school is located in an area with a wide divide between rich and poor, and includes battered womens refuges and 'numerous' bed and breakfast properties housing refugees, asylum seekers and homeless families. The school's intake is very mixed as a result, with more than 40 different languages represented and 80% of the pupils speak English is an additional language. As a Christian school, it is 'proud to welcome many faiths' - more than 50% of the children are Muslim. The school 'is well known for its calm, friendly atmosphere' and has 'very good' community links with local hotels and businesses. The children support Barnardo's and other charities on a regular basis. Each class has a primary helper to support both pupils on the SEN register and new arrivals, in particular those who do not yet speak English. There is an after-school playcentre which caters for between 45 and 50 children.
