General information

Background: Purpose-built in 1959 to replace a school bombed during the war, this school also offers nursery provision for 40 pupils. Situated in the centre of Maida Vale, it draws children from St John's Wood and neighbouring parishes; over-subscribed, with more than four applications per place. New early-years unit and computer suite with 23 stations and interactive whiteboard in 2005; Astroturf pitch laid in 2006. There are two full-time teachers employed for every class at both key stages and specialist teaching in science, ICT, PE and design technology. Centre of excellence for use of interactive whiteboards. There are regular visits to cultural and education centres and museums; for example, pupils from Years 3 to 6 visit Sayers Croft Environmental Centre, Surrey, and trips are arranged to North Yorkshire for Year 4, Dorset for Year 5 and France for Year 6. The school uses a recently-developed sports centre at Paddington Recreational Ground and facilities at Lords Indoor Cricket School. Pupils participate in a wide range of sports including football, cricket, netball, unihoc and touch rugby; Middlesex under-11 eight-a-side cricket champions (2004, 2005, 2006). With the help of the active parents' association, the school raised £35,000 towards the cost of interactive whiteboards and a £1million building programme. Beacon status (1999); DfES achievement award (2003); training school status (2004). Ethos: 'Respect for each other, regardless of colour, creed or nationality.' .
