General information

Background: Founded in 1872; occupies small split site near Victoria Station in Belgravia, an area of London dominated by large hotels, embassies and households from higher social classes. Only 10 per cent of pupils, however, come from these areas; rest drawn from council estates and privately-rented flats off Buckingham Palace Road and Churchill Gardens; 'significant' number from families that expect high achievements. Nursery housed in adapted basement of school. Facilities include a purpose-built computer suite; space for sport limited to the school hall and playground, supplemented by swimming lessons in the Queen Mother Sports' Centre and facilities in another school nearby. School clubs include PE, recorder, choir, football, art, drama, dance, and French; school is member of the Victoria Primary Schools Sports Association, which arranges inter-school competitive sports fixtures. School names music as a particular strength (including tuition in five instruments); proud of 'splendid' swimming achievements; encourages pupils to raise money for charity, including annual Lent Appeal; 'very active' Parent-Teacher Association is within the top five national fundraisers. Religious life of school is integral part of the curriculum; ethos founded on Christian belief and practice; parents and friends worship with the school in church several times each year. Over-subscribed. Close links with local church and business communities.
