General information
Headteacher: George Fisher, appointed in 2000.
Background: Founded in 1545, the school moved to its present site in 1885 and, due to its close proximity to Coventry railway station, has a very large catchment area. About 30% of pupils come from ethnic minorities and assemblies, charitable events, activity days and religious studies are all used to highlight the contributions and distinctive nature of the various cultures that enrich the life of the school.A new science block augments a sixth-form centre, which comprises two floors of study and seminar rooms, with a common room area and cafeteria. Computer literacy is a high priority. The ratio of computers to pupils is one to six and all have a work area and an e-mail address. The school is nationally renowned for its sporting achievements, with county representatives in several sports. It has a good reputation for cross-country running and hosts the annual King Henry VIII Relay Race. Sporting enthusiasts take part in tours to France, Canada, Australia and South Africa and there are regular water sports and skiing trips abroad. Pupils can learn to play almost any musical instrument and there are four choirs and two orchestras. Concerts are performed regularly at locations including Coventry Cathedral and Warwick University. Pupils have the opportunity to take Lamda exams, and frequent drama productions cover periods and styles from Shakespeare to Ibsen and Gilbert & Sullivan.
Alumni: Eric Malpass, novelist; Sir Basil Spence, architect; Philip Larkin, poet; Roger Harrabin, journalist.
Higher education: 92% (1 Oxford 7 Cambridge).
