General information
Background: Opened in 1974, the school is one of 19 secondaries in Coventry and one of the city's nine original community colleges. It serves a wide and diverse catchment area in the south west of Coventry. Its 'excellent' modern buildings, completed in 1980, are attractively situated within a large greenbelt of woods and playing fields, giving the whole site 'a very open, expansive feeling for an essentially urban school'. The site is adjacent to Westwood Business Park and the University of Warwick, and the school has 'close, highly valued' working relationships with both of these. Its provision for 16- to 19-year-olds operates through a highly effective consortium arrangement with neighbouring comprehensives, particularly Finham Park School with which The Westwood School has a joint sixth form. Recently, new ICT facilities were acquired and the school's science and technology areas refurbished. Further refurbishment and expansion will take place after gaining Specialist School status in 2004. Numbers at the school are continuously rising. The school has received the Education Extra award with distinction, in recognition of the extensive extra-curricular activities and study clubs, and it gained the Sports Mark award in 2001. The school achieved Investor in People status in 2004 has worked closely with the University of Nottingham's 'Improving the Quality of Education for All' project. The school's original name taken from a city councillor who showed particular dedication to rebuilding secondary education on comprehensive lines after the war. It is proud of this heritage and remains committed to partnership with the city and the LEA. After gaining Specialist School status and achieving a continuous record of improved results the school changed its name from September 2004. 'A popular and successful school aiming for continuous improvement serving the south west of Coventry. We pride ourselves on a caring ethos with close links to parents, business and the local community.' Caring and focussed on pupil progress and attainment.
