General information

Background: Whitley Abbey is situated on the south side of the city in a very special and unique location. It is surrounded by 65 acres of land that contains a lake, a Victorian landscaped shrubbery, a stretch of the River Sowe and areas of land that have SINC status (Site of Interest for Nature Conservation). It is an urban school in the middle of a nature reserve. The school has benefited from a complete rebuild that was completed in September 2000. The school has a gymnasium, extensive playing fields and tennis courts, a suite of art rooms including a photography darkroom, five well-equipped design technology areas and six science laboratories. The national curriculum includes core subjects: English, mathematics, science and foundation subjects are French, history, geography, physical education, art, music, technology, information and communication technology, religious education and drama. The school has wide range of extra-curricular activities including athletics, badminton, basketball, computing, cricket, cross-country, mathematics club and science club. The school aims to ensure that students develop interpersonal skills, flexibility of attitude, enterprise and self-sufficiency to enable them to relate successfully to their peers, adults and the wider community.
