General information
Headteacher: Lorna Ogilvie, appointed in 1998.
Background: Croydon High School, founded in 1872, makes every effort to ensure that girls embrace all aspects of school. The school's curriculum provides the depth and breadth necessary to develop creative, practical and problem-solving skills. At GCSE level, compulsory core subjects, along with a wide range of optional courses, provide the foundation for an array of study possibilities in the sixth form. The sixth-form programme also includes a life skills course or an AS option in philosophy. A thorough programme of careers advice is in place throughout the senior school years and a biannual careers convention also offers glimpses into a wide range of professional opportunities. Pastoral care is strong: girls are encouraged to seek advice from any member of staff of their choice. The school also has a student-based counselling scheme called Friendly Faces. Well endowed with facilities including dance studios and a 25-metre swimming pool, the school does well in a range of sports. Netballers have won 14 national titles and pupils have competed at national level in table tennis, athletics and diving. Croydon High's music department is strong and many senior musicians join national orchestras and choirs. About half of the pupils study art to GCSE and there are regular school art exhibitions. Drama is hugely popular and the girls gain acting experience and study stage management and set design. Exchanges abroad are a regular part of school life and recent World Challenge expeditions have led girls to such exotic destinations as Mexico, Mongolia and Namibia.
Alumni: Jacqueline du Pre, cellist; Helen Chadwick, artist; Anneka Rice, television presenter; Jill Tweedie, journalist; Dame Marion Roe, former MP.
Uniform: White banner revere collar, short or long sleeve, navy with green and white trim, plain blue or green wrapover, navy with zippable fleece lining and logo and navy with green collar.
Higher education: 91% (2 Oxford 6 Cambridge).
Special needs: If special education needs are identified each girl is given an indvidual education plan. The school provides help for mild emotional or behavioural difficulties.
Inspection: February 2002: The good standard of teaching contributes to pupils' attainment and progress at all stages. The differing needs of the pupils are generally met and there is usually a good degree of challenge. In the senior school, the teaching was good or better in more than two-thirds of the lessons, and some was excellent.
Feeder schools: Park Hill Infant School; St David's Primary; Croydon High Junior.
Girls' age range: 3 to 18.
Percentage admitted according to academic ability: 100.
Average class size (seniors; 11-16): 22.
Average class size (sixth form): 9.
