General information
Headteacher: Peter Clare-Hunt, appointed in September 1999.
Staff: 36 (men 15, women 21).
Background: Cumnor House School was founded in 1931 on the present site. After a brief wartime evacuation in Sussex it returned to South Croydon in 1945. A school of the same name, but of no formal connection flourishes in Danes Hills, Sussex to this day. Cumnor is a proprietorialy school. Mr and Mrs Jenkins are the principals since 1986. The school is situated in a suburban setting in South Croydon, close to Purely and Coulsdon. Originally a large domestic residence it has been much extended on its two-acre site providing light well maintained classrooms with specialist rooms. The school has a 10-acre playing field within a walking distance. The school facilities include two science laboratories, a modern indoor heated swimming pool, a large art room, as well as kiln room for pottery and a dark room for photography. A 24 station fully networked computer laboratory and a school-wide PC network are included in the provision. Music has been one of the school?s particular strengths and a music house next to the school provides a large music room, a keyboard laboratory for 20 boys, and four practice rooms. The school owns a large number of musical instruments and all boys are initially introduced to eight orchestral instruments in year three at no extra cost before setting on two, which they learn for the year. Over 80 per cent of its boys play at least one instrument and there are senior, junior and beginner group ensembles in strings, woodwind and brass, as well as four choirs, one of which, The Choristers, is its elite choir. Fully qualified physical education staff teaches all soccer, rugby, cricket, athletics, and swimming from reception. As a school it believes ardently in traditional values, which include good manners, courtesy, care, tolerance and respect towards others, self-discipline and a sense of duty and responsibility.
Approach to discipline: The school places great emphasis on pastoral care provision. Good manners respect for others and their property, self-respect and a sense of responsibility and duty underpin the schools approach to discipline.
Uniform: Grey trousers (shorts and cap in preparatory), grey shirt, red blazer with black trim, red/black strip tie, and black shoes. Uniform strictly enforced.
Special needs: The school has a full-time head of learning support with resource centre that oversees special needs throughout the school.
Inspection: September 2004: 'Cumnor House is a school with considerable strengths. It provides its pupils with a positive environment in which to learn and with very good pastoral care. Pupils achieve good standards and their personal development is good. Pupils benefit from the good teaching and speak well of their school. The governance and management of the school is sound but the allocation of responsibilities hinders the effectiveness of the management.'
