Background: Founded in 1853 and moved to is present magnificent estate in 1924 when Lord Hollingsworth donated the Ballards estate to the Warehouseman's Clerk's and Draper's Guild. Both preparatory and senior schools occupy a 110-acre campus which is an oasis of country woodland on Croydon's Surrey border. The prep school is housed in a modern building with light, airy classrooms and a wealth of specialist facilities, and shares a chapel, huge theatre, indoor swimming pool and sports arena with the senior school. Excellent carpeted classrooms; two assembly halls, two sports hall, gymnasium, science laboratories, music school, two art rooms, computer suite, and chapel. The prep school is 'dedicated to providing the highest standards in independent co-education' and most pupils move on to the senior school. Small classes and a high staff: pupil ratio ensures that children receive 'a generous amount of individual attention'. All pupils have the opportunity to develop their talents to the full in music, drama, ICT, science, art and design technology, and French is also taught in addition to National Curriculum subjects. Music, PE and ICT are provided by specialist teachers throughout the school and older children are taught by specialists for all subjects. Football, netball, hockey, cross-country, athletics, swimming, tennis, table tennis, trampolining and dance are offered; extensive fixture list of matches against other schools; weekly swimming coaching. Dramatic and musical productions taken place in the Prep School and large proportion of pupils learn musical instrument. 'Pupils are challenged and extended through a culture of encouragement, praise and reward. The happy children work hard and play hard. Individual achievements count.' .
Approach to discipline: 'Pupils are expected to behave appropriately at all times and to show real respect and feeling for their peers and all adults they meet.'
Uniform: Boys: shorts, grey shirt, pullover, maroon-and-gold piped blazer, maroon and gold tie. Girls: grey striped blouse, pinafore, maroon cardigan, maroon-and-gold piped blazer, pink-and-white striped cotton summer dress. School and house games colours are worn as appropriate. 'Uniform is compulsory and strictly enforced.'
Special needs: Full-time support coordinator gives specialist tuition and supports class teaching.
Inspection: February 2004: 'This is a school with much strength and very few weaknesses. Standards of attainment and progress are good. The behaviour of pupils is very good and they respond very positively to the good teaching. The school provides very high levels of pastoral care, relationships among pupils and between them and the staff are of a high order and the provision for pupils? personal and social development is very good. The leadership and management of the school by the head and senior management team, supported by the governors are very good. Some imbalances were detected in the teaching time allocated to the core subjects in years one and two and some inconsistencies occur generally in the quality of reports to parents.'
