Background: Appleby Grammar School is a foundation co-educational comprehensive school, which caters for students in the 11 to 19-age range. It has distinguished history, having originated from a Chantry school. The school has specialist technology college status and aims to raise standards across the curriculum with the advantages this will bring. Sport and physical education are an important part of the school curriculum. The school runs regular competitive teams at various age levels in athletics, cricket, cross-country, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis and occasionally in basketball and badminton. There are opportunities for students to play flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola, cello, double bass, cornet, trumpet, horn, trombone or tuba with visiting specialist teachers. It has a wide range of sporting activities including rugby, football, basketball, cricket, athletics, cross-country, hockey, netball, tennis, rounders and gymnastics. The school aims to provide its students with an education, which will enable them to cope with the demands of modern society.
