General information
Headteacher: Christopher Lumb, appointed in 2004.
Background: Austin Friars St Monica's opened in 1951 and is a coeducational Catholic Augustinian school for children of all faiths, races and abilities. Its motto defines how it sees itself: [L]In All Things Charity[R]. A small school, it seeks to include everyone in its community and lives by the writings of St Augustine, emphasising a true spirit of inquiry. Pupils can join at any time; the school describes its entrance assessment as friendly and sensitive to the needs of candidates. Pupils receive strong academic support and there is a specialist programme for those who need extra help. ICT is an important element across the curriculum; regular seminars and presentations also cultivate critical thinking. Extracurricular activities are designed to develop character, decision-making and leadership. The performing and visual arts have a strong following, while various camps, visits abroad and tours take place during the holidays. Exchanges are made with schools in France and Spain, and there have been rugby tours to South Africa, Holland and Ireland. There are annual ski trips to America and Europe. Austin Friars St Monica's has won two Sportsmark Gold awards in recognition of its excellent sports provision the school's extensive range of options includes basketball, canoeing and golf. The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and Young Enterprise are also popular after-school activities.
Alumni: Professor Stuart Reid, dean of the faculty of veterinery medicine at the University of Glasgow.
Higher education: 100%.
Special needs: A learning support department offers one-to-one help for pupils with special needs.
Inspection: February 2004: Austin Friars St Monica's is a well-led school that successfully prepares all its pupils for the next stage in their education and helps them to produce good, often very good, levels of attainment in most of their work. The strong input of pastoral care and guidance, which enables very good personal development, results in high standards of learning, attitudes and behaviour. This has a marked influence on the attainment and progress of the pupils. The future development of ICT is impeded by out-of-date and often ineffective equipment. The accommodation in the junior school and in the science department in the senior school lacks space.
