General information

Background: Affiliated to Casterton School, Casterton Preparatory School is situated two miles from Kirkby Lonsdale in Cumbria, on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire within 20 minutes of the M6 and rail links. It stands in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of the Lune Valley. The school has dedicated playing areas, playing fields and an adventure playground, aswell as an indoor swimming pool. French, drama, music, PE, art and crafts are taught to specialist levels, RE and PSHE are taught in addition to the national curriculum and individual music lessons are taken by 50 per cent of pupils. There is provision for dyslexia through the senior school. Pupils also take part in sports including rugby, hockey, netball, swimming, cricket, rounder, athletics, lacrosse and tennis. Extra-curricular activities include French club and the Boys club, which is run with Sedbergh school. There is a drama production at least once a year. Before-school provision is available from 7.55am for day pupils and after-school care is available until 6pm, or later by arrangement. Prospective pupils must take an exam for entrance into Year 3 to Year 6. Other factors taken into account include a parental visit, informal interview and previous school report.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm but fair policy'. Small class sizes ensure ease of control. No verbal or physical bullying permitted and there is strict supervision of children at all time both inside and outside the school.

Uniform: Boys: Red v-neck jumper, white shirt, navy trousers.shorts, red blazer, tie. Girls: Red v-neck jumper, white shirt, navy pleated skirt, red blazer, tie. 'Strict enforcement of uniform throughout.'

Inspection: September 2003: 'Pupils achieve high standards in relation to their ability and reach standards that are well above the national average for similar type schools. They reach very high standards in their personal development. The quality of education provided by the school is very good. The generous dedication of the staff and the positive community and family ethos created with pupil participation nurtures the development of the whole person and confers considerable benefit on all pupils.'
