General information

Background: Dallam School was formed came into being in 1984 from the amalgamation of Heversham Grammar School, founded in 1613, and Milnthorpe Secondary School. Around 50 pupils, many of them from abroad, board at the school, which aims to be the 'friendliest and happiest boarding school in the land'. An 'international theme' runs through the curriculum, as does 'extensive' use of information and communication technology. Students are prepared for higher education through the school's 'tradition of excellent examination results'. Extra-curricular opportunities include Young Enterprise, social events, a sixth form council, team sports and drama. Outdoor pursuits training is offered to national standards in many activities, in addition to community sports leadership awards. Students have represented the county and country in various sports. 'Excellent' facilities, including new provision for science, the arts, technology and information technology, playing fields, a 'large modern' sports hall, an outdoor heated swimming pool, four tennis courts, and a gymnasium. The 'lively and welcoming' sixth form is based at Heversham, and uses most of the school's facilities while offering a 'separate identity' from the rest of the school. Courses are also held for adults in the school and the surrounding villages, and the school encourages families to learn together. 'There is a collegiate atmosphere in which each student is welcomed and valued'. The school has strong business and work closely with voluntary groups.
