General information
Headteacher: C R T Fenwick.
Background: Hurworth House School was founded in 1946 as a private preparatory boarding school for boys. The founder, Mrs D. L. Carew Shaw, after failing to find a school that was right for her young son, established her own in the fine Georgian building that we see today. The school is now run as an Independent Charitable Trust with its own Board of Governors. There have, of course, also been many changes to the depth and range of the curriculum over the years, and a purpose-built classroom block was recently constructed to accommodate these developments. Indeed, many people who are familiar with the historic frontage of the school are often pleasantly surprised at the scale and the modernity of what lies behind it. Sport plays a significant role in the curriculum of the school. All Hurworth House boys are involved in mainstream sports: soccer, rugby and cricket. Specialist staff are available to promote skills and develop expertise. Regular competitive fixtures afford challenge and the opportunity to excel. Music is central to life at Hurworth House School. All boys are encouraged to learn a musical instrument and the school has a number of visiting professional peripatetic teachers.
Inspection: January 2002: 'Hurworth House School is a happy school where relationships are very good. The staff work very hard and enable pupils to achieve good standards. GCSE results have been consistently well above the average for all schools nationally with a very high percentage of A* and A grades. These results are very good for pupils of this range of ability.'
Feeder schools: Pupils come from both state and independent primary schools in the area.
Boys' age range: 4 to 16.
