General information

Background: This over-subscribed school was originally founded as a girls' secondary in 1912, and is situated in an urban area surrounded by terraced houses and adjacent to Darlington Memorial Hospital. The 'traditional' building is 'well maintained' and 'attractively' sited around two qudrangles. Recent developments include the construction of a new office block, medical room, classroom, information and communication technology (ICT) suite and library. The nearby Denes area is used for geography and environmental studies. Years 5 and 6 use a nearby playing field and an indoor sports hall, which is a short bus ride away, and pupils take part in netball and football tournaments. There are 'strong links' with Holy Trinity church and the local Baptist church. The children contribute weekly to their chosen charity and participate annually in a 'major' sponsored fundraising event. Extra-curricular activities include French, recorders, choir, football, netball, basketball and drama. The school has gained an Investors in People award. A full-time special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinator, two part-time SEN teachers and three support assistants work with SEN pupils both in the classroom and in one of the two SEN rooms. Computers with specialist programmes are also available to SEN pupils and partially sighted children benefit from access to CCTV.
