Inspection: November 2005: 'Overall, standards of achievement are good and in some subjects outstanding. Children under-five achieve outstanding standards in the areas of language, literacy and communication and in their mathematical development. This is due in part to the high profile the school gives to these aspects of the curriculum. Almost all pupils make at least good progress in their learning, with a considerable number making outstanding progress in key skills. In particular, standards in speaking and listening are outstanding. Pupils respond quickly and appropriately to comments and questions, not only from their teachers but also from each other. Teachers generally have good knowledge of the subjects they teach. In a few cases, their expertise is outstanding and they show skill in a wide range of subjects. Most lessons are well planned and teachers prepare a range of suitable resources. There is a broad curriculum that gives pupils enough experience in all subjects of the National Curriculum in England. However, there are no discreet lessons in Information Technology (IT). Pupils in years five and six also learn French. The school offers several extra-curricular activities that include a range of lunch-time clubs, music tuition, ballet and a football team. There are strong links with the Cathedral and pupils regularly perform or join in services there. The school has close links with parents who are keen to support its work. Staff support and care for pupils well. There are appropriate policies for all aspects of health and safety, including fire safety. The premises are secure. Pupils feel safe. There are appropriate arrangements for checking staff records. Staff know the procedures for child protection and have received training from the headteacher. However, there has been no training involving external agencies. Staff are well-qualified, generally have good subject knowledge and is well-deployed. There is no formal system of staff appraisal or performance management to identify training needs of individual teachers. Similarly, there is no formal induction for newly qualified teachers in order for them to gain full Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Partnerships with parents are good. The school values and takes account of the views of parents and pupils.'
