Background: Situated on a 120-acre campus in the Vale of Clwyd, Howell?s School aims to develop young girls into successful, articulate achievers, and the school?s size ensures that each child is valued and appreciated. Boarding houses provide pupils with an extended family where life-long friendships can develop through social events such as barbecues around the pool, themed parties and shopping expeditions. The school offers a broad and sound academic education with additional opportunities offered in art, sport, drama and music. Extracurricular activities include the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, Young Enterprise, sailing, debating, climbing and aerobics. Many activities enable the girls to develop their leadership and teamwork skills outside the classroom. The school's facilities include an adventure playground, a sailing and outdoor centre on the shores of Llyn Brenig, and a recently opened equestrian centre which has 11 horses available for riding lessons. In the sixth form, girls are taught advanced study skills and techniques, and individual assistance enables pupils to make the most of their study opportunities. Pupils are encouraged to be independent learners and have common rooms for study and leisure. Sixth-form boarders have their own bedrooms and personal computers and are offered driving lessons, and they are encouraged to take a leading role within the school. .

Higher education: 100%.

Inspection: May 2000: 'The school provides a good academic education and excellent pastoral care for its pupils. Pupils behave well and relationships between staff and pupils are very cordial. However, the neglect of the library and the limited use of ICT in lessons, weaken the educational provision. The leadership of the school suffers from the absence of a headteacher and other qualified people with decision-making authority.'.
