Background: Founded in 1284; junior school has existed since 1972; whole school is housed in attractive buildings set back from the road on the outskirts of Ruthin, a busy market town in north Wales. There are extensive grounds to front and rear. The Junior School makes use of all senior facilities, including new science laboratories, music suite, new large sports hall, workshops, a greenhouse and also uses senior school staff expertise where appropriate. The curriculum is designed to offer a broad education on an individual level, promoting confidence and teamwork within good family values. There are good extra-curricular activities including drama, music, choirs, tennis, dance, cookery, gardening, Warhammer, judo and golf. Drama and music are strong with regular full-length plays, musicals and concerts. There is a very wide range of sports with fixtures in football, cricket, rugby, netball and rounders, an annual sports day and swimming gala. All from Year three takes English Speaking Board exams. LAMDA, many take ADA and ABRSM exams. Much fundraising takes place for leukaemia charities and local hospices. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 6.30pm. Ethos: 'A small family-style school where each child is an individual and all children are respected.' .

Approach to discipline: Pupils are expected to adhere to a small number of common-sense based school rules. Praise is used to encourage adherence and withdrawal of privileges is the main punishment.

Uniform: Burgundy blazer and cap (felt hat for girls), grey skirt, shorts, trousers and white shirts. Grey socks for boys and tights and summer dresses for girls. Navy tracksuit and burgundy fleece for outdoor wear. Uniform regulations are enforced strictly.

Special needs: One part-time teacher supports a small number of pupils with minor difficulties in English or mathematics, usually on a weekly one-to-one basis.

Inspection: February 2000: 'Ruthin School provides its pupils with a generally satisfactory education in pleasant surroundings. The school is characterised by various worthwhile features that contribute in a positive way to the quality of the education provided and the standards achieved. These features include a most supportive environment, high quality teaching and learning in a range of departments and an approach that allows the majority of pupils to achieve standards that are at least commensurate with what might be expected of them. However, serious consideration now needs to be given to various issues in order to improve matters still further. These include a reappraisal of the content and management of the curriculum in the Senior School, of certain aspects of the management practices in both the junior and senior sections of the school and of the approaches adopted in order to serve the particular needs of some pupils.'
