General information

Headteacher: John Rowlands.

Background: Ruthin School can trace its origins back to 1284 when Edward I built a castle and with it a garrison chapel which was later assimilated by St Peter's Church. After the Reformation a former pupil, Gabriel Goodman, Dean of Westminster to Elizabeth I, refounded Ruthin School in 1574 as a centre of academic excellence in North Wales and it was granted a Royal Charter. The school moved to its present site in the early 1890s and was honoured by a visit from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to mark its septecentenary in 1984. Situated on the edge of the small market town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd, N.Wales, an area noted for its outstanding natural beauty and for its mild and healthy climate. Chester, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as Snowdonia and the North Wales coast are close by and provide rich opportunities for extra-curricular interests.Over the years there have been a number of developments. Most recently these include: a new Science and Technology block, the acquisition of new boarding accommodation, a new fitness suite, a new sports hall and upgrading of the boarding facilities.Sport is an important part of the school curriculum and despite being a small school is able to put out teams in a number of sports. Individual or team sports requiring fewer players than the traditional sports have grown substantially in the recent past. The school undertakes fixtures against other schools in rugby, netball, hockey, football, cricket and tennis. Recently table tennis and basketball teams have been established. They compete in local leagues.
