General information

Headteacher: Kate Carey.

Staff: 18 (men 2, women 16).

Background: Founded in 1892, the school is set in a self-contained site in a quiet suburb on the outskirts of Derby. Derby High's prep and pre-prep schools are co-educational and share a site and a head with the senior girls school. The youngest children are catered for in a detached house on the site. Each pupil receives a 'happy and purposeful education, including many extra-curricular activities'. Sports played include football, netball and rugby, with pupils also offered an IT club, music and outings to local places of educational interest. Pupils are able to take full advantage of the senior school's facilities. Social skills are taught together with academic skills, and it is in the junior school that pupils learn to deal with people. The pupil's dedication and interest to the environment around them has been 'especially noted'.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm, fair, caring.'.

Uniform: Colours are bottle green, white and grey. 'Uniform is worn throughout the school.'.

Inspection: February 2004: 'The school?s educational provision has major strengths in all three sections. Attainment, learning and teaching are good throughout the school. In the junior and kindergarten sections it has a balanced curriculum, with considerable strength in the range of activities offered and in many of its subjects. The personal development and pastoral care of pupils in all sections of the school provide a very good basis for their progress towards the next stage in their education. Some of the issues the school needs to consider are provision of information and communication technology (ICT) in kindergarten and senior school, and the use of management systems to improve performance in several areas of the school.'
