General information

Headteacher: Colin Callaghan, appointed in 2004.

Staff: 44 (men 4, women 50).

Background: The arrival of the current head followed a major refurbishment of the school last year, which provided updated IT facilities and the installation of computers in every class. This summer has seen the overhaul of the home economics room while a new music department, sixth-form centre and art department are underway. There are also plans to redevelop the assembly hall (which doubles as the theatre) with tiered seating and hi-tech lighting and sound systems. Science is taught as three separate subjects in the first three years. The curriculum is generous, with all subjects offered at GCSE also offered at A-level apart from drama. Subjects offered include design and technology, home economics and German. Psychology is available at AS-level and business studies is introduced in the sixth form as an A-level. School sports facilities include a floodlit all-weather pitch, a large sports hall and playing fields. Hockey and netball teams both fare well, and the school has excelled in netball at county level. Trampolining, tennis, athletics and rounders are also popular. Girls are particularly active in their support of Fair Trade and Amnesty International. Bi-annual expeditions occur under the auspices of World Challenge, with a visit to Argentina planned for 2006. The school also runs a Lent project, supporting specific charities with money raised through pupils' own dedication and initiative. Extracurricular activities are designed to help develop girls' self-confidence and skills, while work placements, and musical and dramatic performances are all part of the school experience.

Higher education: 92%.

Special needs: A visiting teacher from the Derby Dyslexia Institute provides lunchtime sessions. Specialist EFL help is also offered.

Inspection: February 2004: The school's educational provision has major strengths. Attainment, learning and teaching are good throughout the school. The personal development and pastoral care of pupils in all sections of the school provide a very good basis for their progress towards the next stage in their education.
