Background: Founded as Repton Preparatory in 1940, the school moved to Foremarke Hall in 1947, although it was not renamed Foremarke Hall until 2000. Situated between Derby and Burton-on-Trent and well-served by motorways, trunk roads and airports, this fine Palladian house was built in 1760 and offers 50 acres of playing fields, woodland, and landscaped lake. The school's curriculum aims to 'establish positive attitudes, foster talents and develop a range of skills', and includes French and drama. Every child learns to compose and read music and more than 200 study one or more of a wide range of solo or orchestral instruments. The string orchestra, a brass band and two choirs regularly perform in school and in public. Scholarships are offered to children who show particular promise in music. 'Considerable importance' is attached to technology and all pupils receive timetabled lessons in IT and the use of computers. Sports include swimming, football, rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, rounders, tennis, athletics, archery, sailing, canoeing, orienteering and badminton. Pupils are successful in sporting competitions, particularly tennis and hockey. The school has 'strong' community links and its own charity. The Foremarke Trust raises funds for Russian orphans to spend a year with the school. The school values its 'family atmosphere and strong sense of community' and many pupils gain scholarships. The school is a supportive environment in which it seeks to promote a sense of responsibility and discipline, self-motivation, pride in self and work and sound personal organisational skills. Above all, it aims to encourage self-esteem and confidence in an environment which values the contribution of all. Foremarke facilitates the opportunity for all children to develop to their full potential.

Approach to discipline: 'The school believes in a clear framework where expectations of good manners and decent behaviour are addressed at appropriate levels through the year groups. Staff relationships with pupils are crucial to this understanding.'

Uniform: Boys: dark-blue blazer/jumper, grey flannels. Girls: kilt, blue blouse. Uniform regulations are strictly adhered to.

Special needs: Three specialist staff plus two purpose-designed SEN rooms. Two specialist part-time staff teach English as a Foreign Language.

Inspection: October 2004: 'Foremarke Hall, (Repton Preparatory School), provides a secure and supportive community in which pupils feel valued and are very well behaved. Very good teaching throughout the school enables them to make good progress and achieve very good standards. Small class sizes enable the learning needs of individual pupils to be identified and supported. Some aspects of school management are not yet fully effective.'
