General information

Background: Opened in 1971, the school is housed in a single storey building in the middle of residential private housing, three miles from central Derby. It is set in 'extensive' grounds, featuring a pond which was recently developed with support from the Conservation Volunteers Trust group. There are also 'many' trees, a nature area, a sports field with football pitch, running track, and pitches for high jump, long jump and rounders. Silverhill is 'proud of its achievements' which include being county six-a-side football champions for 1998 and 1999 and league and cup success at 11-a-side. Their badminton team are the city champions and the school also competes in short tennis, tag rugby and netball. It also offers a gymnastics club. The school has a 'house' system whereby inter-house competitions and academic achievement are rewarded at the end of the school year with prizes. Silverhill has 'strong community links' and a 'thriving' parent-teacher's association which raises funds to support the school. Several pupils have has their poems published and in the local newspaper story writer's competition, the school was placed first and second in the junior section. The headteacher's philosophy is 'to develop the children's confidence in the things they are good at to give them a greater motivation to tackle new areas. Everyone is good at something.' .
