General information

Background: The original school building was constructed in 1874 and the younger children, Years 3 and 4 are currently accommodated on this site. Older pupils are housed on another site half a mile away at Hurds Hollow. The newer building was opened in 1971, has an area of 1.6 hectares and overlooks the Derwent Valley. Additional buildings were opened in 1980 and these are 'semi-open plan' in design. Further additions to the school are due to be completed in 2002 and will facilitate the move of younger pupils to the Hurds Hollow site also. Strong links have been maintained with the local church of the same name over the years. Instrumental tuition is available in the violin, keyboard, brass, flute and cello. The school's parent, teacher and friends association is 'active' and becomes involved in a number of fundraising activities. There is a house system in operation, and pupils are placed in one of the schools four houses at random. Pupils gain points for their house through academic effort, social responsibility and sporting achievements and inter-house quizzes and sporting activities are arranged on a regular basis. .
