General information

Headteacher: Nigel R Home.

Background: Bendarroch School was established in 1978 to provide a civilised and non-institutionalised environment for boys and girls. Originally based in Bendarroch House in West Hill, the school moved in 1993 to the site of the former primary school in Aylesbeare. Here, it enjoys more space, situated on the southern edge of the delightful village, overlooking fields and trees. Entrance is by interview, and there is no entrance test. The children follow a traditional syllabus, covering all aspects of the national curriculum and considerably more. All children learn French, and Latin is available for older children as an after-school activity. Art, drama and music have 'an important place' within the timetable. The curriculum includes games lessons and swimming for all children. Tennis, short tennis, badminton and sailing are all available as optional after-school activities. Visits to theatres, museums and places of educational interest are frequently arranged. Children can also have private music tuition (piano, guitar, brass instruments and drums). In these respects, Bendarroch is like many other good schools. It is Bendarroch's ethos, which is different. These subjects are pursued in an atmosphere of warmth, enjoyment and high expectation. Many children with specific learning difficulties (most notably dyslexia) have passed through the school and have gone on to achieve academic success at senior schools and later at university.

Uniform: Simple, practical, inexpensive and comfortable to wear..

Inspection: June 2005: 'Bendarroch School is a distinctive school where all pupils are treated as individuals and valued for the contribution they make to the school community. The pupils like coming to school and it is held in high esteem by the parents. The staff know the pupils very well, are caring, and work together to create a warm family atmosphere. Individual teaching and support for pupils is good and class teaching is always sound and some observed teaching good. Although the varied curriculum balance. Behaviour is very good; the pupils know what is expected of them and apply themselves to their work.'

Secondary schools: Exeter; The Maynard; St Margaret's; Colyton Grammar.
