General information
Headteacher: D Stoneman.
Staff: 22 (men 10, women 12).
Background: The school has occupied its current premises since 1901. It is set its own grounds in a self-contained site with sports fields, indoor floodlit unit-turf sports area and large chapel, which is also a public place of worship. It is 'exceptionally well equipped' for the sciences, art, languages, drama and computer technology. The kindergarten benefits from the facilities of the main school where appropriate. Bramdean is a traditional school, which 'offers a high level of education and a distinctive inter-denominational ethos with a balance of Roman Catholic and Anglican pupils and staff'. Small classes enable pupils to receive individual attention, and pupil?s progress through the school according to ability, which enables them to achieve 'fine examination results'. German, single sciences, home economics, textiles and art, drama, music and choral singing are taught as part of the curriculum. The school has a strong choral tradition. It?s broadcasting choir carries out engagements for Sky television and BBC radio and has its own professional recording studio. Sports include cricket, football, tennis, rugby, archery, netball, swimming, athletics and hockey, with all PE staff experienced in specific areas. Pupils also enjoy 'excellent opportunities' for competitive and recreational extra-curricular activities. Pupils sit Common Entrance to move from the prep to the senior school and most complete their secondary education at Bramdean, although this facility is also available to those wishing to move on to other public schools. Bramdean maintains strong links with the local community, which are strengthened through the annual fete and involvement in a wide range of charity work. The school is selective, with most admissions made according to academic ability and sporting, music and artistic ability also taken into account. Voice trials for entry into the chapel and concert choir are held annually.
Approach to discipline: Bramdean has a traditional approach to discipline based on mutual respect, self worth and kindness towards others. The school rules have been framed to ensure the sensible freedom of each individual, within the overall requirement of providing for the smooth running of the school. Rules are kept simple but firmly insisted upon, in the interests of a well-ordered community. The basic requirement is that pupils should show courtesy towards others and uphold the reputation of the school. Inconsiderate behaviour towards others is regarded as a very serious offence. A clear code of behaviour and conduct is expected from the pupils, as is a clear understanding of commitment to work and school activities. Whatever its facilities, the spirit of the school is finally expressed in its pupils. Each makes a distinctive contribution to the life of the school and each will gain something different from Bramdean. But our hope is that they will take forward with them the idea of education as an enjoyable, continuing process, and values that will stand them in good stead throughout their lives.
Uniform: 'The distinctive style of the boys' uniform dates back over 80 years and can instantly be recognised as being that of Bramdean. The girls' uniform came about through a partnership of the stylish tastes of the proprietor and headmistress of Bramdean and the female pupils. The girls were asked what kind of summer uniform they would like and decided upon the striking dress worn by the girls in the Home and Away programme. The school has obtained, from the television company in Australia, exclusive rights in this country to wear the dress as part of the school summer dress code. Bramdean places much emphasis on the wearing of uniform and the presentation of its pupils in and out of school.'
Special needs: Links are maintained with outside agencies and the school provides individual support for the small number of pupils with particular needs.
Inspection: January 2007: 'Bramdean School is a highly successful, harmonious school where the pupils are well-mannered, happy and achieve very high standards. Academic attainment is excellent and there are very good opportunities for the development of sporting, artistic and musical talents. The school has a good range of specialist teaching areas and a well-qualified staff who enable pupils to make good progress. The strong family atmosphere contributes to the pupils? sense of belonging and the good level of care which they are shown. The school is very well led and managed which ensures that the quality of education is good. The school meets virtually all of the regulations for registration and is attending to two minor issues.'
