General information

Background: Bramdean moved to Exeter in 1901 and is situated on high ground on the outskirts of the city of Exeter in a residential area. It is on several main omnibus routes and is within one mile of the M5 Motorway and two main line stations. It is also approximately four miles from Exeter Airport. It is excellently placed to take full advantage of the facilities of the ancient city and the magnificent coastline and countryside nearby. Art is encouraged at all levels in the school. The well-equipped art department gives pupils of all ages opportunities to explore the different disciplines and express their creative talents to the full. A broad-based visual education is encouraged in art and pupils move between drawing, painting and printmaking into pottery and three-dimensional work, fabric printing, silk painting and fine art textile design.Pupils of all ages are encouraged to participate in drama. All drama activities aim to build pupils? confidence as well as giving them a technical grounding in acting and communication. The School offers a professional recording studio, digital CD and analogue video recording, high band TV cameras and professional editing facilities. There is a suite of electronic keyboards and ICT facilities including a music publishing programme.

Inspection: March 2000: 'Bramdean is a distinctive school with clearly defined aims and a well established ethos. It has developed steadily over the last 30 years, extending its age range, developing its site and offering coeducation. It is non-selective, but offers music and other bursaries and scholarships, and has a school financed assisted places scheme. The school provides a good education. Examination results in the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) are good. Strength of the school is the choral singing, in which standards are exceptional. Pupils show positive attitudes and behaviour in all aspects of their school life. Their relationships with each other across the age groups show respect, courtesy and a capacity to work together well. The daily act of worship is simple and reflects the ethos of the school. Relationships between staff and pupils are founded on mutual respect and are good. Support for pupils? welfare and guidance is valued, but careers guidance could be provided more systematically.'
