General information

Background: Founded in 1546, Colyton Grammar School is one of oldest state grammar schools in country. The school outgrew its original site and moved to neighboring village of Colyford in 1924. It is set in an 18-acre rural campus in Axe Valley in east Devon. Major building improvements over last 10 years have included a new science and technology centre, music suite, drama studio, modern languages wing, new library and information technology centre and sixth-form study centre. Sports facilities include sports hall, floodlit all-weather pitch for hockey and tennis. A new sports hall was completed in 2003; new arts centre in 2006. The school has well-established links with industry, with extensive work-experience programmes including a European work-experience programme for sixth-formers. More than 30 extra-curricular clubs cover full range of sporting, cultural and recreational activities. Formally recognised as one of a small number of schools to have received three 'outstanding' Ofsted inspection reports. Ambassador School of the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Beacon status (1998); Artsmark (2004); Investor in People status (1999); DfES achievement award (2002); Leading Edge status (2003). Ethos: 'Purposeful with high expectations, with staff and students working in partnership. There is a very strong sense of community.' .
