General information

Headteacher: Jack Cusworth.

Staff: 26 (men 7, women 19).

Background: Founded in 1912 on the site of a convent in Doncaster, the school is a Christian foundation run as a non-profit making charitable trust. It has three large red-brick Victorian buildings including a three-storey semi-detached residence known as the Town Field Villa, which houses the nursery and year 3 pupils, a craft area and kiln room. The school overlooks the Town Moor Park which is sometimes used for sports coaching, although matches are also played at local sports clubs. In the last three years the school has gained 24 scholarships in many subjects, and a major academic one at Repton. Children participate in music and art festivals, local adult drama productions and some boys play cricket for Yorkshire. Up to #4,000 is raised each year for charities. The school's library opened in 1992. It runs an outdoor pursuits programme, a swimming gala and arts festival, receives regular visits from the Theatre Group and is involved in an annual art festival for local schools. The school also offers regular school trips and maintains close links with local leisure centres and employers. Hill House provides a 'happy stimulating environment in which a caring, professional staff motivates children to achieve their full potential'.

Approach to discipline: 'A positive behaviour policy was introduced in 1997. Miscreants are warned, named on repetition of the offence and then parents are informed if there is no improvement.'.

Uniform: Smart black shoes, grey socks, grey shorts/skirts, white shirt, striped tie/bow tie in burgundy on peacock blue, burgundy blazer with peacock blue lining. V-neck grey jumper with double red stripe round the neck..

Inspection: November 2003: 'The school has made considerable progress since its creation in 2002. Its major strengths include the good start pupils get in the foundation stage and throughout the junior school, resulting in high standards being attained in several subjects by the age of 11. In addition, the school has a good ethos, pupils? behaviour is very good and they are well cared for. By the time they leave, good standards are attained in most subjects at GCSE level. Areas for improvement include the development of the good practice, right across the whole school, a review of the appropriateness of certain aspects of the senior school curriculum and a review of the roles and responsibilities of the school?s senior managers and curriculum leaders.'

Secondary schools: Worksop College; Queen Elizabeth's Grammar; Wakefield Girls' High; Ackworth; Repton.
