General information

Headteacher: A W Browning.

Background: Dumpton School was founded in 1903 at Broadstairs. It was evacuated at the beginning of World War II to Dorset and is now situated in Wimborne. Formerly a boys? boarding school, it became co-educational with both boarders and day pupils in 1995. The school became a charitable trust in 1968 and the present head was appointed in 1978. In 2001, the governors made the decision to close the boarding side. At the same time an extensive programme of building to develop many teaching areas was undertaken. The accommodation fully supports the teaching and learning across the curriculum. The Pre-Prep is in a well-constructed building with good classroom space and other facilities. The rest of the school is likewise well resourced and specialist areas for science, art, ICT, classrooms dedicated to particular subjects, and the gym, are very good additional features. Kitchens, dining rooms, offices and sick rooms are all very attractive. Externally, the heated swimming pool, hard play areas/ tennis courts and extensive playing fields are all well maintained.

Inspection: May 2002: 'Dumpton School has strong features. The positive school ethos is reflected by the firm relationship between staff and pupils and between pupils themselves. The pastoral care and attention together with the understanding shown by staff is a significant factor in the promoting of the caring environment, which provides a sound foundation for teaching and learning. This eager approach to learning and the commendable pupil behaviour allows very many pupils to reach levels of attainment that are at least in line with their age and individual capabilities. However, the school would benefit by rectifying some important organisational and curricular shortcomings by introducing a formal system of staff appraisal upon which a comprehensive programme of professional development could be based.?.
