General information
Headteacher: Claire Renton, appointed in September 2004.
Staff: 23 (men 0, women 23).
Background: Founded by John and Peggy Booker in 1950, Knighton is a beautiful Georgian building situated in 30 acres of grounds. Facilities include sports hall, drama studies, music school, outdoor riding school and stables, netball and tennis courts, swimming pool, hockey pitch and croquet lawns. There is a strong emphasis on academic achievement with girls staying up to year eight to complete 13 plus CE and scholarships. Information and communication technology (ICT), design and technology and Latin and Greek all form the part of the standard curriculum but there are a broad range of extra-curricular clubs which include dance, speech and drama, trampoline and riding. The music is particularly outstanding with two choirs. The majority of children take lessons for one-two instruments and singing. Hockey, netball, swimming, rounder activities, tennis and gym are all targeted to a high standard. Pop Lacrosse and Touch rugby are included in extra-curricular activities. The boarding ethos is strong and on a flexible basis, with action packed weekends planned activities vary from camping, trampoline workshops, picnics, drama workshops and gym. The nurture of each individual and a deep care for each other is paramount. Finding and fulfilling the potential in each child whether it is academic, musical, drama or sports.
Approach to discipline: Firm, fair, strong emphasis is placed on good behaviour and honesty, according to school policy..
Uniform: Red dungarees, yellow polo shirt for every day. Best uniform of grey skirt, red gingham skirt, red sweater..
Special needs: Excellent special needs department. One full time member of staff and subsiding support staff. .
Inspection: September 2005: 'Knighton House School provides a good academic education for its pupils. The provision for care is very good and promotes very good relationships. Leadership of the school is good and is well supported by the parents, although some aspects of day-to-day management are not tight enough. The pupils are taught well and they make good progress in most subjects. Some lessons are excellent. The very good behaviour and very positive relationships in the school reflect the pupils? very good attitude to school and to learning. The school has a good record of success at common entrance, including scholarships, to a variety of independent senior schools, but the provision for mathematics is not good enough in the senior years.'
