Background: Sherborne School for Girls, founded in 1899, has a continuous programme of improvement ensuring it is able to respond to the demands of an ever-changing academic world. The school has a close working relationship with nearby Sherborne School, introducing many of the benefits of coeducation alongside the advantages of a single-sex education. Sherborne is committed to full-time boarding; the girls look forward to an extended day and a varied weekend programme. A housemistress keeps in close contact with parents and all girls are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves. Most girls take nine or 10 subjects at GCSE and in the sixth form can choose from 24 subjects including business studies and Russian. The school offers a careers and university advisory service with a comprehensive library and a programme of lectures and visits. All pupils take skills training in IT, leading to national certification. The school has a large network of computers. Drama is used to build confidence and joint academic courses are run in collaboration with the boys' school. Individual and group lessons are available in speech and drama and many girls take Guildhall exams. Music is popular at GCSE and A-level. There are flourishing choirs and several girls play for national and county youth orchestras. Individual tuition is offered in all orchestral instruments, percussion and singing. There is a range of clubs and an active CCF. Girls also enjoy foreign tours, exchanges and visits, most recently to Australia, Canada and South Africa.
