General information

Background: Founded in 1906, St Augustine's moved to its present site in 1964. Its seven classrooms are built around a 'large hall' used for PE and drama, a dining room which is also used for group teaching, and a chapel for quiet prayer and religious worship. The new library provided by the Governors in 1996 gives the school 'facilities to be proud of'. The over-subscribed school also offers a playing field including a football and rugby pitch for winter use and cricket and rounders pitch during the summer term. The school's two hard play areas are divided by its swimming pool, which is used between May and July. An 'important feature' of the grounds is the pond which is used for environmental activities and was funded from a British Rail National Competition won by two pupils. In 1999 pupils were invited to join Dr David Bellamy in launching the Chesil Beach 'Little Tern Project'. The school also holds the Healthy School Award (1997 to 1999). It is proud of its Year 6 team which took part in The Children's Parliament on the Environment, represented the local area in the regional finals and were awarded a diploma for their essay and debate on 'sustainable development issues'. A 'wide range' of other extra-curricular activities includes country dancing and the choir. The school is 'very active' in charity work, holding an annual 'sponsored spell' for 'Children Helping Children'. Catholicism is 'central' to the school's daily life and their principal aim is to 'foster in the children a deep love and knowledge of the Christian faith'.
