General information

Background: Situated close to the centre of Dalbeattie and the Solway, the present school building opened in 1958. Dalbeattie High is located amidst farmland, with an outlook to the granite hills of the Stewartry, providing a 'magnificent' setting for the school. Existing facilities include 'extensive' playing fields, a modern games hall complex and community wing and 'excellent' computing, science and technology laboratories. A number of other projects are currently under construction, and will provide the school with a new computing suite, a video-conferencing room and a fitness suite. The school has developed 'strong' links with the local community. Pupils with special educational needs (SEN) are monitored and assisted by specialist staff from Dalbeattie High's learning support team. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the numerous curricular and extra-curricular activities organised by the school. The school has had successes in a number events recently including winning the Burns Trophy at the Burns Federation Art Competition, the James Thin Trophy for best overall poem at the Young Poets competition 2000 and a number of honours in piping at the Dumfries music festival. In sport, pupils have recently become regional volleyball champions in four categories, reached the final of the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Cup in football, won fourteen medals at the regional badminton championships and the Secondary 1 girls' hockey team were runners up in the Dr Turner's Tournament. There are 'lots of opportunities' to get involved in academic, dramatic, musical, sporting and other extra-curricular clubs and activities.
