General information
Background: Built in 1954 to educate children of workers on new forests planted locally; large teaching area, grassy area with trees and shrubs, tarmac area, and play area with swings, slide and low-level adventure playground. Located in educationally-rich environment: farmland, wetlands, lochs, forests, burns, the source of the river Cree, and the largest ancient woodland in Britain. Area teems with plants and wildlife; reminders of past range from lead mines at Blackcraig, to Whitecairn, a prehistoric burial site, and archaeological dig at Whithorn. Has ready access to beaches, a hydro-electric scheme and town of Newton Stewart. In 2000, pupils helped create an information board for the nearby Whitecairn burial cairn, in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage; also won John Marshall Cup for best display of Galloway wildlife; took part in Edinburgh Museum's geology study of Scotland in 2001. Funds from Scottish Natural Heritage have enabled children to plant trees and create a wildlife area and bog garden in school grounds, and to design and build a bench for the play area with the help of the local college. New Opportunity Funding has been used to provide three after-school clubs in games/physical education, art/making things, and drama. Pupils raise money for a variety of charities and entertain local retired people; donated profits from 2002 Christmas production to Macmillan Cancer Relief Fund. In 2006, the school piloted a programme whereby pupils are able to learn to play brass instruments via a videoconferencing facility operated by a music instructor 60 miles away. Ethos: 'Glentrool School prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere where pupils and parents are valued and listened to.' .
