General information
Background: Situated at the axis point of the town's historic high street, Kirkcudbright academy is set in pleasant, landscaped grounds. In one direction it looks onto the Tolbooth rooftops and gardens of the old town; in the other across the playing fields to the estuary of the River Dee. Although a school has existed in Kirkcudbright since 1455, the present main school building dates from 1926. Major additions have been made in 1931 (Cochran Hall), 1958 (new block), 1970 (games hall), 1973 (library) and 1990 (mathematics block). The most recent building programme has resulted in extensive refurbishment of the science laboratories and the creation of a multi use games area. The school has a large games hall and a separate gymnasium. The Cavan Park on site provides extensive grounds for rugby, football, hockey and athletics. In addition, the new multi use games area provides an all weather playing surface. The school also has access to the local Squash Club facilities, which are on site. Water activities take place at Loch ken with support from the Outdoor Education Department. Kirkcudbright Swimming Pool, adjacent to the academy, provides swimming for P.E. classes.Kirkcudbright academy offers many opportunities for extra-curricular activities. Highlights of the school's social calendar include the unique Kirkcudbright tradition of the junior and senior Candlemas balls in February and the Half-Marathon organised by staff and pupils in May.The art department holds an annual exhibition of pupils' work in the town's Harbour Cottage Gallery. Also the English department runs the yearly lan Wishart Memorial Creative Writing Competitions, the Peter Cook Memorial competition for non-fiction and ?Youth Speaks?, a public speaking contest. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award s Scheme offers pupils challenges in a wide range of activities and the English department organised trips to a variety of films and plays during the year.Senior students have taken part in the Fulcrum challenge which involved them in raising over £1000 each to finance their trip and visiting countries such as Kenya and India to take part in community projects. The school?s aim is to provide a meaningful and effective education for all the pupils. It seeks to achieve this by creating a caring teaching and learning environment where staff can deliver a curriculum which is responsive both to the needs of individual pupils and those of a changing society. Central to this is a strong partnership between staff, pupils, parents and the wider community, all working together in pursuit of the above aim.
